The Brazilian canning industry is poised for expansion in 2023
Abralatas, a local trade association, predicts that demand for aluminum cans,
which are stronger than other packaging options,
will support steady growth in Brazil’s can industry until 2023.
Cátilo Candido, the chief executive officer of the aluminum can industry in Brazil, stated that “in 2022,
the industry made significant progress.”
“We experienced a ‘adjustment year’ after so much growth and strong recycling rates.
“In 2022, in addition to expanding and constructing new plants, we were aiming to increase the efficiency of our manufacturing chain,” Candido explained.
“We also welcomed significant regulatory advancements in Brazilian environmental regulations targeted at enhancing and promoting solid waste management”
He noted that the business has improved its relationship with garbage collectors in order to comprehend the effects of these new restrictions on the Brazilian recycling industry.
It was also the year that various products, including water, wine, and ready-to-drink beverages, debuted in metal packaging. Candido continued,
“We now have over twenty products packaged in cans, whereas ten years ago we had only a handful.”
Abralatas continued its educational efforts and investments in recycling projects and initiatives, which contributed to Brazil’s remarkable 98.7% beverage can recycling rate.
“This success demonstrates the seriousness with which we operate on the ESG agenda and enables us to complete the year
creating revenue for more than 800,000 individuals in the country who depend on this activity for their livelihood.”
According to researchers at Abralatas, in recent years there has been a change in the behavior of Brazilian consumers, resulting in a substantial increase in the consumption of canned beverages.
Various beverages, including wine, sparkling wine, whisky, coffee, isotonic drinks, and the indigenous Brazilian liquor cachaça, are now available in more eco-friendly metal packaging.
According to Abralatas, Brazil’s annual per capita consumption is currently 151 cans, and there are potential to increase this figure this year.
Candido stated that Abralatas will continue to raise awareness about the significance of can recycling and take a more proactive position on sustainability issues within the industry.
As part of these initiatives, boosting the activities of waste collecting cooperatives in Brazil will receive special focus.
